The Krzysztof Kieślowski Archive has joined the prestigious group of “Treasures of European Film Culture” – an initiative of the European Film Academy highlighting places and collections of particular significance to the heritage of European cinema.
For us, this is a very special distinction and an important confirmation that Krzysztof Kieślowski’s work, together with the archival materials connected with his filmmaking, is significant not only for Polish culture, but also for the history and future of European cinema.
The Archive, based in Sokołowsko – a place closely connected with the director’s biography – thus becomes part of a European map of places that help preserve the memory of cinema: its language, its sensitivity, its ways of telling stories about human beings, and the questions that remain relevant despite the passage of time.
This year’s distinction has an additional symbolic significance for us. The 15th edition of the Hommage à Kieślowski Film Festival was held under the Honorary Patronage of the European Film Academy. It is another expression of recognition for Kieślowski’s legacy and his enduring place in European film culture.
Krzysztof Kieślowski’s relationship with the European Film Academy has a long history. In 1988, the director received the Academy’s first main award – then known as the “Felix” – for “A Short Film About Killing”. Later, “Three Colours: Red” became part of the very centre of European film discourse as one of the most important films of his international period.
Today, as the Krzysztof Kieślowski Archive becomes part of the “Treasures of European Film Culture”, we see it as a special recognition not only of the director’s artistic legacy itself, but also of the work devoted to preserving, cataloguing and making it accessible to future generations of viewers, researchers and filmmakers.
