Typescript with the shooting script for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “From the City of Łódź” (1969). The film presents an impressionistic portrait of Łódź – a city of textile industry and social and architectural contrasts – shot with cinematography by Janusz Kreczmański, Piotr Kwiatkowski, and Stanisław Niedbalski. Before the film received its final title, work on it proceeded under the working titles “The People of Łódź” and “The City of Łódź”. The document is attributed to Krzysztof Kieślowski and Zygmunt Samosiuk. The text is divided into numbered thematic sections – including “Work”. “Customs”. “Celebration”. “Ciuksza”. “Desire to Possess”. “Sunday Amusements”. “Stone City”. “Blood Donation Station”. “Market Exchange”. and “Narrow Streets” – each with its planned footage length. Within each section, subsequent shots are listed under the abbreviation “uj”. (“shot”) with numbers, specifying the shot length, type of framing (detail, close-up, medium, full, long), lens focal lengths, and indications of interior or exterior settings. The shooting script describes, among other things, the interiors of a textile factory, courtyard-wells, street queues and scenes from the Textile Worker’s Day, as well as markets, Sunday festivities in the park, speedway matches, overcrowded apartments, and the new housing blocks that conclude the portrait of the city. The typescript functions as a technical production document, without dialogues, focused on the precise planning of the film’s structure and camera work.
