Julie (Juliette Binoche) and Olivier (Benoît Régent) in the film’s final intimate scene, set against the music of the oratorio Song for the Unification of Europe. Julie’s relationship with Olivier brings the film to a close, showing that love is the meaning of life and makes it possible to emerge from isolation. To heighten the sense of uniqueness, the scene was filmed through an aquarium filled with water – an idea conceived by cinematographer Sławomir Idziak.
