Typescript copy with the screenplay for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “From the City of Łódź” (1969). The film presents an impressionistic portrait of Łódź – a city of textile industry and social and architectural contrasts – shot with cinematography by Janusz Kreczmański, Piotr Kwiatkowski, and Stanisław Niedbalski. Before the film received its final title, work on it proceeded under the working titles “The People of Łódź” and “The City of Łódź”. The document is divided into numbered thematic blocks – including “Work”. “Celebration”. “Customs”. “Ciuksza”. “Desire to Possess”. “Sunday Amusements”. and “Stone City”. The description covers various scenes of life in an industrial city: hard work in the factory, the textile workers’ holiday, everyday entertainments and addictions, children’s play, Sunday walks, and municipal festivities. It juxtaposes images of work, consumption, and leisure with housing problems and the overcrowded old urban architecture, ending with the symbolic image of a new apartment block.
