Description

Typescript copy with the screenplay for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “From the City of Łódź” (1969). The film presents an impressionistic portrait of Łódź – a city of textile industry and social and architectural contrasts – shot with cinematography by Janusz Kreczmański, Piotr Kwiatkowski, and Stanisław Niedbalski. Before the film received its final title, work on it proceeded under the working titles “The People of Łódź” and “The City of Łódź”. The document contains an outline of the film’s sequences divided into numbered sections. These sections record successive series of observational scenes: from images of the Łódź train station, streets, and bazaars, through the car exchange market, street market, scenes at public wells and Łódź’s rivers, to queues at the station, in front of taxis, and the characteristic figure of the “grandmother with a flag” directing trams. Further parts note, among other things, a blood donation point, scenes related to alcoholism, children playing in courtyards, speedway matches, and the queue to the toilet after the competitions. The final sections concern housing and registration problems. The notes function as a working sketch of the film’s structure – without dialogues, but with a precisely planned arrangement of locations, situations, and themes.
