Description

Typescript with letters concerning the production of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “From the City of Łódź” (1969). The film presents an impressionistic portrait of Łódź – a city of textile industry and social and architectural contrasts – shot with cinematography by Janusz Kreczmański, Piotr Kwiatkowski, and Stanisław Niedbalski. Before the film received its final title, work on it proceeded under the working titles “The People of Łódź” and “The City of Łódź”. The document takes the form of a typescript composed of a letter to production authorities requesting the appointment of a production team for the documentary film “The People of Łódź”, noting the need to shoot exterior scenes during a specific season, and of a tabular shooting schedule and film-stock usage plan. It contains a detailed breakdown of sequences, shot numbers, screen footage, number of shooting days, and technical notes. Listed elements include daytime and nighttime exterior filming, “observed” and “unobserved” shots, a division by types of cameras, and other categories. A final summary provides the total number of shooting days (including nights and Sundays) and the amount of film stock used in particular shooting modes. The document has the character of a technical production plan for the film at the stage when it still operated under the working title “The People of Łódź”. The document includes the author’s handwritten corrections and notes.
