Description

Typescript with film-shoot documentation for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “From the City of Łódź” (1969). The film presents an impressionistic portrait of Łódź – a city of textile industry and social and architectural contrasts – shot with cinematography by Janusz Kreczmański, Piotr Kwiatkowski, and Stanisław Niedbalski. Before the film received its final title, work on it proceeded under the working titles “The People of Łódź” and “The City of Łódź”. The document takes the form of a several-page typescript with numbered sequences (1-7) describing planned scenes, filming locations, and situations: work in a large textile factory, celebrations of the Textile Worker’s Day, observations of the city made also with a hidden camera (children, frequenters of parks and bars, young people standing in gateways, people at their windows), as well as the everyday life of Łódź inhabitants looking at shop displays, visiting bazaars, the market exchange, and municipal fairs. Subsequent parts of the document characterize the urban space of Łódź – parks, the speedway stadium, pre-war workers’ housing estates, wooden houses slated for demolition, densely populated one-room apartments, and new developments intended to conclude the film narrative. The typescript functions as preparatory documentation, without visible handwritten corrections, and served as the basis for the film’s production.
