Typescript with the novella for Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film “Blind Chance” (1981). The screenplay was written by Krzysztof Kieślowski. The cinematography for this film was done by Krzysztof Pakulski. The film was produced by the Tor Film Studio. The document is titled “Blind Chance – novel of a feature film” and, in the form of an extended narrative, presents the biography of the main character, Witek Długosz, from his birth in Poznań in 1956, through childhood, school rebellions, youthful religious and sexual experiences, relationships with his father and aunt, and medical studies, up to three possible variants of his later life, determined by “chance” – that is, whether he manages to catch the train to Warsaw. The text includes numerous characters known from the film and expanded political, religious, and social themes, which became the foundation for the film’s construction of three parallel biographies of the protagonist. The typescript has the character of a working, repeatedly revised version of the novella – it contains deletions, additions, and variant dialogues and situation descriptions, which indicate the author’s intensive work on the literary development of the source material for the film’s screenplay. The document includes the author’s handwritten corrections and notes.
