Description

Typescript with a proposal for the television cycle “Decalogue” by Krzysztof Kieślowski and Krzysztof Piesiewicz, which became the basis for the television film cycle “Decalogue” (1988-1989), made from the authors’ screenplays and produced by the Tor Film Studio for Polish Television. The document is titled “Decalogue – proposal for a TV cycle / series. 10 one-hour episodes” and takes the form of a multi-page typescript. It contains an introductory section – an essay-like description of the artistic assumptions of the cycle (reflections on the contemporary crisis of distinguishing good from evil, and on the role of the Ten Commandments as the oldest set of ethical norms) – as well as detailed outlines of all ten episodes, marked with the headings “Episode 1”. “Episode 2”. “Episode 10”. Each of them presents a plot outline with main characters, dramatic situations, family and professional relationships, and also indicates the connection with one of the Commandments (without quoting it directly in the title). The text has the character of conceptual material: written in continuous prose, without scene numbering, it serves as a starting point for the later novellas and screenplays of the episodes, defining the tone of the entire cycle (a move away from journalism and politics in favor of stories about responsibility, guilt, love, faith, and the role of chance in shaping human lives).
