We are used to returning to Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films. Less often do we look at where it all began – the screenplays. And yet they were the first record of a film’s rhythm, its emotional score, and a sketch of a world that had yet to appear on screen.
That is why we recommend a special read: an article by Dr Mikołaj Jazdon – film scholar, expert on Krzysztof Kieślowski’s work, and a friend of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Archive and the Hommage à Kieślowski Festival – entitled “Kieślowski’s Screenplays – Artistic Film Scores”.
The article appears in the latest issue of “Magazyn Filmowy”, published by the Polish Filmmakers Association, and takes the reader into a less familiar but fascinating area of the “Dekalog” director’s work – his path as a screenwriter.
It presents the screenplay not merely as a text preceding the film, but as an autonomous space of creative work: a place where rhythm, tension, structure and the emotional logic of the future film begin to emerge.
